Haemolysis (rupture of red blood cells) may occur
(a) in the body (in vivo haemolysis) or
(b) during or after taking the blood sample (in vitro haemolysis).
To minimise in vitro haemolysis , take the blood with a wide-bore needle and a syringe. Draw the blood slowly using minimum suction. Avoid using a vacutainer.
Tests for in-vivo haemolysis :
Please note that certain tests are performed in different departments.
For Plama haptoglobin, LDH and bilirubin:- tests are performed in Biochemistry.
For FBC, Blood Film and Reticulocyte count, test is performed in Haematology.
Direct Antiglobulin Test is performed in Blood Bank.
