Diagnostic Use and Interpretation
This test detects the Factor V Leiden mutation in the Factor V gene. The resultidentifies a heritable cause for APC resistance and thus can indicate an increased risk of thrombosis.

Information on Factor V Leiden Mutation:
A mutation in the factor V gene which changes arginine 506 to a glutamine does not affect the coagulation properties of factor V but renders the protein resistant to protein C degradation. This mutation leads to Protein C resistance and is hence a thrombosis risk factor.
