Processing of referred work from other hospitals

• A bone marrow biopsy may be required as part of a haematology work-up after referral to the Haematology Department. It is also useful to detect infiltrative lesions of the bone marrow.

• Contact either the Clinical Haematology Registrar responsible for ward referrals, or the Laboratory Haematology registrar(ext. 22070 or via Lablink). The bone marrow must be booked with the Special Haematology section(ext. 22065)

• Biopsies on adult patients are usually performed by one of the Haematology Registrars.
• Paediatric and oncology patients are biopsied by their departmental Registrars.

Cell markers and chromosomes are taken on all bone marrows performed. Additional tubes may be required, discuss the diagnosis and tests required with the registrar before the bone marrow aspirate begins.

• Aspirate result available the following working day (phone ext 22070)
• Trephine biopsy results are usually available within 5 working days (phone ext 22065)
