• Blood collected into EDTA.
• PK Enzyme is stable for 6 days at 4 degrees Celsius and 24 hours at room temperature.
• Patient samples being sent from outside the Auckland area should be accompanied by a control sample.
• Any specimens transported overnight should be transported on wet ice.

Reference Range: Normal

Results are reported as Normal, Deficient or Intermediate and an added comment if required.

A full quantitative assay for pyruvate kinase activity should be performed on any patient (and their family members) with a Deficient or Intermediate result. This is only done after discussion with the mediacal staff concerned.

If a result is deficient and a PK Assay is required, please contact the Special Haematology Laboratory ( Ext 22065) within 5 days
