Specimen Collection

Specimen must be tested within 3 hours of collection.

Sample should be sent on ice.

Also preferable if a normal control is sent under the same conditions

Expected heterozygous range 0.26-0.86 EU/gHb

NADH Methaemoglobin Reductase level is lower in newborn. Adult level is reached by the age of 4 months.

Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Methaemoglobinaemia describes a clinical situation where more than 1% of the haemoglobin of the blood has been oxidised to the ferric form. This can be due to congenital causes including NADH-Methaemoglobin reductase.
