Smears are difficult to collect correctly and lack sensitivity especially where the lesion is ambiguous. This test is therefore no longer available.
The appropriate sample is a UTM viral swab for HSV culture, which may be used for PCR if there is clinical emergency.
Full clinical details are essential.
This enables the laboratory to select appropriate tests and request additional specimens where necessary to establish the diagnosis.
