Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

The main use of CA 19-9 is the diagnosis and monitoring of pancreatic cancer.

Also may be elevated in oesophageal, colon, stomach, biliary tract, breast, and some ovarian (mucinous type) cancers.

Values > 34 U/mL are found in pancreatitis, liver disease, biliary tract diseases, thyroid disease and diffuse interstitial lung diseases.

About 25% of pancreatic cancers do not express high levels of CA 19-9.

CA 19-9 is not suitable as a screening test for use in primary diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
