Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Monitoring the treatment and predicting recurrence of ovarian cancer.

Not all ovarian cancers express CA 125.

CA 125 is not suitable as a screening test for use in primary diagnosis of tumours.

CA 125 concentrations of up to 60 U/mL may occur during normal menstruation.

Elevated levels may occur in other malignancies, pregnancy, or less frequently in non-malignant conditions such as liver disease, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and peritoneal trauma (laparotomy). Gastrointestinal, bronchial and breast carcinomas are occasionally associated with elevated CA 125.

The half life of CA 125 is 5 days.
