Multi-resistant organism screening

Specimen Collection

Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE)

Rectal swab (faecal specimen is an acceptable alternative)

Extended-spectrum B -lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE)

Rectal swab (faecal specimen is an acceptable alternative)

If patient has an IDC, a urine sample should also be sent for ESBL screen.

Swabs should also be taken from following sites if relevant to patient : wounds, umbilicus of neonates.

Carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE)

Rectal swab (faecal specimen is an acceptable alternative)

If patient has an IDC, a urine sample should also be sent for ESBL screen.

Swabs should also be taken from following sites if relevant to patient : wounds, umbilicus of neonates.

Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MRAB)

Rectal swab (faecal specimen is an acceptable alternative)

Plus tracheal aspirate / sputum and bilateral groin swab.

If patient has an IDC, a urine sample should also be sent for MRAB screen.

Swabs should also be taken from following sites if relevant to patient: wounds, umbilicus of neonates.

Turnaround Time: Within 3 days

Negative culture or interim report issued for ESBL, CPE and MRAB after 24-48 hours

Negative culture or interim report issued for VRE after 72 hours.
