Selenium - Red Cell

Blood
Test performed by: LabPLUS

Gadolinium is known to positively interfere with selenium testing by ICP-MS.

If gadolinium-containing contrast media has been administered, specimens for selenium testing should not be collected until at least 96 hours have elapsed.

Information about contamination of trace element specimens

Specimen Collection

Whole blood required - DO NOT SPIN

Dedicated sample preferred

EDTA

4 mL EDTA Whole Blood

Heparin

5 mL Heparin Whole Blood

Trace Metal

5 mL Trace Metal Whole Blood

Trace Metal K2EDTA

5 mL Trace Metal K2EDTA Whole Blood
Reference Intervals

Units : nmol/g Hb

Reference interval : 4.0 to 15.0 nmol/g Hb

Uncertainty of measurement : 15%

Turnaround Time: Within 1 week
Assay Method

Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS)

Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

RBC selenium (Se) has the advantage over plasma Se in that its concentration is unaffected by the acute phase response to inflammation.

In contrast, plasma Se may be decreased in states of infection, illness, inflammation or trauma, which may give a false impression of Se deficiency.
