Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A (HAV) virus. The virus is transmitted through the faecal/oral route, usually through ingestion of contaminated food or water. Unlike hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease. It is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms. Occasionally fulminant hepatitis may occus, which is associated with high mortality.
