Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Serum Amyloid A (SSA) is an acute phase reactant and a marker of inflammation, used predominantly to screen patients with high clinical suspicion for periodic fever syndromes.

SSA may be elevated between febrile attacks or in patients without febrile attacks. However the specificity of SSA is low and can be elevated in other conditions.

For patients with periodic fever syndromes, an elevation in SSA can be used to further predict risk for amyloidosis, or used to adjust therapy.

Please note: this test is currently sent to Canterbury Health Laboratories.
