Routine service Monday to Friday
For weekdays prior to a public holiday samples should be received in the laboratory by 1500 to allow for testing.
Request for urgent testing outside of these times is by arrangement, and must be approved by the laboratory haematologist on call. They can be contacted via the hospital operator.

For samples sent to LabPlus within the Auckland region:

specimens are collected into culture media optimally (sterile saline as a back-up). Transport to the laboratory at 4 degrees without delay :

Do not add formalin or other fixative .

Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

The department is a reference centre for the diagnosis and classification acute leukaemia, and typing bone marrow and peripheral blood from leukaemic patients at presentation and relapse. Remission samples are examined for minimal residual disease(MRD) if informative markers are present. For MRD requests if the diagnostic immunophenotyping was not performed by LabPlus, please contact the Cell Markers departmment before sending the specimen.
Immunophenotyping is performed on peripheral blood from patients with a possible chronic lymphoproliferative disorders. Panels of antibodies are selected according to the underlying problem and most studies are performed by flow cytometry.
Immunophenotyping can also be performed on a range of specimens (bone marrow, peripheral blood, fine needle aspirates, CSF, fluids, biopsy cell suspensions) by flow cytometry and/or immunocytochemistry where lymphomas or other haematological malignancies are suspected. Full analysis by flow cytometry is possible on less than a million cells which makes this technique very useful for fine needle aspirates. Where limited malignant cells are present in a sample immunocytochemistry may be more appropriate. This will be determined with the Haematologist after reviewing the specimen.
