• If a blood film or compulsory film is requested as part of a FBC, please register for FBC and CFLM.
• If an EDTA is received and only blood film or compulsory film is requested, please register for FBC and CFLM.

Notes

• Samples are processed for a Full Blood Count(FBC) and the results pass through an algorithm ( derived from FBC parameters, cumulative results, analyser flagging and patient location ) which determines whether a blood film is generated or not.
• Microscopists review the blood film to confirm cell counts, enumerate cell populations, describe red cell, white cell and platelet populations and provide information which is not available from FBC parameters alone.
• Interpretative comments are added as appropriate and film referred to Haematologists for further comment as required.

Specimen Collection

• FBC compulsory film or blood film request has to be done in conjunction with FBC request.
• If a blood film review is required with a FBC, please request a Blood Film or Compulsory Film on request form.
• Specimen Suitability:
• Blood Film Examination (Automated or Manual differential with Morphology comment) - less than 6 hours from time of collection (sample stored at room temp or 4 ^o C).
• Blood Film Examination (Automated or Manual differential without Morphology comment) - less than 12 hours from time of collection (sample stored at room temp or 4 ^o C).

Turnaround Time:

• 45 minutes for urgent FBC.
• 2 Hours for non-urgent FBC.
• Bloodfilm examination turnaround time is dependent on the location and the results of Full Blood Count parameters.
