Sucrose tolerance test

Plasma/Serum
Test performed by: LabPLUS Special Chemistry

"This test is no longer available from Labplus. If want to investigate for lactose (or sucrose) malabsorption, can consider the non-invasive hydrogen/methane breath test or the more invasive intestinal biopsy dissacharidases test"

This tests for a disaccharidase deficiency involving the sucrase enzyme.

The test protocol is the same as for a glucose tolerance test, except that sucrose is given instead of glucose, at a dose of 1g/kg body weight (up to a maximum of 50 g).

Blood specimens are taken pre-test and half hourly for two hours. The rate of increase of blood glucose should be similar to that seen with a glucose tolerance test. A lesser increase indicates non-absorption due to sucrase deficiency.

This test is less discriminatory than measuring disaccharidase activity in a biopsy specimen.
see Disaccharidases

As an alternative to performing an intestinal biopsy, breath hydrogen can be measured following a sucrose load.
