Specimen Collection

All samples for Cytogenetics must be collected using sterile technique.
Same day delivery (at room temperature)

Bone marrow aspirate (minimum 2mL): Collection tubes are available on request from the Cytogenetics laboratory.  After addition of the specimen to the tube, please mix well to avoid clotting. KCH specimens need to be delivered to the laboratory within 45 minutes of collection.

Bone marrow trephine: Collection tubes containing transport media are available on request from the Cytogenetics laboratory. Trephine specimens must be accompanied by a peripheral blood specimen.

Peripheral blood: minimum 2mL collected into a standard heparin vacutainer tube (not provided by LabPlus).



FISH

Specimen Collection (refer to Chromosome Analysis)


The Department of Diagnostic Genetics hold an extensive collection of commercial probes available for Oncology FISH analysis.  Probes are available for the following uses:

  1. Detection of numerical, structural and gene amplification for diagnosis and disease monitoring.
  2. Monitoring sex mismatched bone marrow transplant patients.
  3. Other studies may be carried out on request or by arrangement.
