Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

• Test performed is a Functional Assay
• Antithrombin is synthesised in the liver. It is a plasma inactivator of thrombin and factors of the intrinsic pathway. A deficiency of antithrombin may predispose to thrombosis.
• Antithrombin may be decreased during heparin therapy, liver disease, due to congenital deficiency, and immediately following an acute thrombotic episode or DIC.
