Thrombophilia Screen


Plasma
Test performed by: LabPLUS Coagulation


A Thrombophilia screen will not be performed without a Thrombophilia testing request form being received. This should be printed out, filled in with the appropriate indication marked and attached to the laboratory request form.

Thrombophilia Screen Request Form

Test performed by the Coagulation laboratory (Ext 22069 ).
For results, use ward computer or phone Lablink:   22000 or ( 09) 307-8995 or 0800 522 758.


Specimen Collection
EDTA1 Sample Adult EDTA Whole Blood (Always Required)
2xCitrate2.7 mL 2xCitrate Blood

or


3xCitrate1.8 mL 3xCitrate Blood

  • The patients should be medically stable and off both oral anticoagulant and heparin therapy at the time of testing.
  • The venepuncture should be atraumatic.
  • If the specimen is collected from outside Auckland Hospital: send  2x 1ml plasma aliquots, double spun and frozen.
  •  If requesting a LUPUS screen at the same time, send an additional tube or filtered aliquot.
  • Referral Laboratories:

    Please separate the specimen and send minimum 2 x  1.0 ml platelet poor plasma aliquots to LabPlus frozen.


    Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

    Thrombophilia screening tests are requested in two major patient groups, those with venous thrombosis and those who have a possible or known family history of thrombosis.
    The thrombophilia screen includes:

    activated Protein C resistance

    Antithrombin

    Factor V Leiden Mutation Analysis (if APCR is abnormal)

    Protein C

    Protein S

    Prothrombin Mutation

    Inherited thrombophilia should be considered in the following clinical settings:

    Lupus Anticoagulant Study

    In some instances, a Fibrinolytic screen may also be indicated. This is usually done by referral to the Haemostasis
    and Thrombosis Clinic at Auckland City Hospital, or in consultation with a Haematologist.

    Specimen Transport Instructions for Referring Laboratories

    Please complete the Thrombophilia Request Form and e-mail to Coag@adhb.govt.nz .

    Plasma should be sent frozen.
