Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Immunophenotyping can also be performed on a range of specimens (bone marrow, peripheral blood, fine needle aspirates, CSF, fluids, biopsy cell suspensions) by flow cytometry and/or immunocytochemistry where lymphomas or other haematological malignancies are suspected. Full analysis by flow cytometry is possible on less than a million cells which makes this technique very useful for fine needle aspirates. Where limited malignant cells are present in the sample immunocytochemistry may be more appropriate. This will be determined with the Haematologist after reviewing the specimen.
