Assay Method

Effective from 9.9.15

Immunochromatographic assay for the determination of Alpha thalassaemia by the detection of HbBarts.

Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

The Alpha Thalassaemia screen employs an immunochromatographic assay to detect small amounts of Hb Barts which can be found in the blood of some alpha thalassaemia carriers. This method replaced the Brilliant Cresyl Blue stain for HbH from Sept 2015.

Sensitivity for alpha thalassaemia trait is between 97% - 100%, depending on the genotype of the alpha thalassaemia trait. A negative result therefore does not exclude alpha thalassaemia trait, particularly for one-gene deletion alpha thalassemia heterozygous state (carrier of one-gene deletion alpha thalassemia).  If alpha thalassaemia trait is suspected but Alpha Thalassaemia screen is negative, please discuss with a Haematologist on the need for molecular testing.
