After Hours Cannulation Service

Hours of Service: 16:00-00:00 (Midnight), Monday to Sunday (including Public Holidays)

The phlebotomy department provides a service by taking on some of the cannula insertion workload.
Notification is via the ADHB iBleep service. Please provide patient Name and NHI.

All urgent requests for cannulation or blood collection should be handled internally by the ward staff.

Due to the number of cannulation requests, which can take up to 2 hours to action, the Cannulation staff must prioritise requests.

Cannulation requests are prioritised as follows

  1. Pain Relief
  2. Antibiotics
  3. Blood Transfusion
  4. I.V. Fluids
  5. Blood Tests

In the event where demand exceeds capacity, these requests will be referred back to the wards or to the Clinical Nurse Advisor for action.

Please Note

There is no back up staff available from LabPlus for this service and it may not be available if the rostered staff member is on leave.
In this situation the clinical staff must take responsibility for cannulation.
