Fructosamine

Plasma/Serum
Test performed by: LabPLUS Support Services transport this to a 3rd party for testing

Specimen Collection

This test has been largely replaced by haemoglobin A1c  for monitoring diabetics .

Specimen sent to Northland Pathology Laboratory (NPL) (Northland Path Lab) for processing.

SST3.5 mL SST Blood (Preferred)
Plain4 mL Plain Blood
Reference Intervals

Units: umol/L

Reference ranges:

200 - 300

physiological level

300 - 400

indicates elevated mean blood glucose level

 > 400

indicates poor diabetic control

150 - 260

normal level in pregnancy

Uncertainty of Measurement:   10%

High albumin turnover states (such as proteinuria in diabetic nephropathy) falsely lower fructosamine concentrations.

Fructosamine is falsely low in obese patients.

Diagnostic Use and Interpretation

Fructosamine is glycated albumin and is an index of the average glucose concentration over the preceding 1 - 3 weeks (compared with 2 - 3 months for HbA1c).

Fructosamine can be useful when HbA1c is invalid, due to increased haemoglobin turnover (haemolysis or chronic blood loss), or when rapid changes in glycaemic control need to be measured.
