Blood

Viral Load results may be adversely affected by delays in transport.

Specimen Collection
A dedicated specimen (i.e. no other tests to be performed) is required for this assay.
Do not use heparin tubes
Do not use serum samples
Do not separate EDTA samples

Do not spin PPT samples

4 mL EDTA Whole Blood (Preferred)
500 uL Paediatric Micro-EDTA Whole Blood (Preferred)
Note: 500 uL is the absolute minimum volume required for the test.

5 mL Adult PPT Whole Blood
Do not freeze unseparated PPT tubes . If the specimen requires freezing, the supernatant must be removed from the gel first.
Plasma Viral Load

Plasma testing should only detect active virus, not latent virus. Whole blood testing will detect both.

If you require plasma viral load you MUST write PLASMA EBV VIRAL LOAD on the form. All other requests will get whole blood testing.

Turnaround Time: Between 3 days and 1 week
Assay Method

EBV quantitation is done using LightMix from TIBMOLBIOL on Roche LC480 instrument.

The linear measuring range of this assay is:

1665 IU/ml (3.22 Log IU/ml) to 166500000 IU/ml (8.22 Log IU/ml)

EBV viral load is reported in International Units (IU) and log IU. One IU equates to 10 viral copies.
